De Paul is a pretty legit program, but know that this is an end of the road program. Most the people in there are there because they have jail time hanging over their head and/or are homeless. I was denied several basic human liberties, such as appropriate bedding and heating to be able to sleep in basic comfort, mental health medication is available but you wont see it the first month. If you go through the detox program you are provided with simple anxiety medications such as, kolonodine, hydroxazine, gabbapentin, 50mg trazadone. etc. But they are PRN meds and run out after 14-16 days. seeing a head doctor takes at least 3 weeeks. so i found myself day 16 without any meds and withdrawling from gabbapentin, I tried to get and emergency push to see the doctor, which is a thing. but the staff was too busy with their holiday agenda and time off to make it happen. last weekend someone brought Phenabute on the floor sending 2 young men to the ER from overdosing, and we were all drug tested, only 12 or so people out of 58 came back clean. Only the one person who brought the drug in was discharged, even though the guidelines clearly state that any USE whatsoever is immediate grounds for discharge. I no longer felt safe in the environment and didnt trust myself fully to say no again. Long story short, if you are at the end of the road and out of other options this program can do great things for you, It just wasn't the right one for me.

The one thing that resonates most regarding treatment and working a solid program is that GRATITUDE IS AN ACTION! I was appalled at the few seconds I spent reading the first few words of reviews regarding DePaul. How quickly addicts forget the level of desperation felt when under the bridges, or showering in convenient store bathrooms when they were consumed with the possibility of being admitted into DePaul. It seems it takes no time for the entitlement to kick in and it becomes a constant battle from both sides to bring the purpose back to the core goal. RECOVERY!! DePaul does its very best to provide the tools necessary to survive and remain clean. They accommodate those that need more time, and are focused on making sure that housing is in place. The rules are miniscule and are to be followed solely as a tool to teach us how to respect the system which provides three generous meals a day, snacks, walks, and a multiple of smoke breaks. I encourage all that read this to remember why you have chosen to go into DePaul; to improve our lives and to find a solution to our addiction. If that remains your objective and humility remains your compass than you are bound to achieve the tools and resources it takes to truly stand a chance to overcome this disease. DePaul does its job to help Create freedom from addiction, it is up to you as the client to remember where you came from, where you are now, and what you want your life to be like. If this remains the centerpiece of your mindset than you will understand that DePaul is not the enemy, and that the enemy is the addiction.

Even though I was discharged 3 days before graduation, I owe my life to this place. I got to meet people and heard the stories of individuals that I might have never had the chance to get to know. The majority of the staff are very helpful. There are obviously going to be tensions at some points. They are there to help change our behavior, guide us through a new way of thinking, so of course we will butt heads. It is coed, but the women are on the second floor and there is to be no contact between male or female clients. Even if the female client sends correspondence through the mail lol. I just took 9 months sober on the 19th of this month, and even though I am the one who did the work, I credit DP for showing me the way. My counselor, Gabriela is the most amazing, caring and compassionate staff member they have. If you end up here, make sure you talk to her and utilize her great skills to help you through. She is not the type to tell you what you need to do, she challenges your thinking so you come up with what you should do. I owe this woman my life! So if you are looking for a place to start you on the path to a sober life, look no further.
